Minnesota firm gives people a lift

Dear Answer Man, I was at the new justice center in Austin a few weeks ago and was noticing, when I went up to the courtroom floor, that the elevator was manufactured by the Minnesota Elevator Co. I didn't know they make elevators in Minnesota — do you know about this company? — Otis

I do now. Minnesota Elevator Inc. has been around for 40 years, actually, and it makes various types of elevators, from small passenger elevators such as those at the handsome new justice center in Austin to semi truck lifts. The company is based in Mankato.

The company installs about 100 cars per year, mostly within the five-state area. And it may seem contradictory, but Minnesota Elevator also owns Badger Elevator, a full service elevator company that's based in the Milwaukee area. At the company picnic, I wonder if they play softball for Paul Bunyan's Axe .

The Minnesota firm took over the Wisconsin firm — which is as it should be — in July 2009.
