Movie, discussion about bullying slated Monday

The Austin community will have the opportunity Monday night to view the documentary film "Bullied" and meet the subject of the movie afterward.

The event is sponsored by the Austin Human Rights Commission. AHS CHAI (CHemical Health Awareness Initiative) and the AHS Diversity Club.

The movie from the Teaching Tolerance program of the Southern Poverty Law Center is described by organizers as a hard-hitting documentary about one student’s ordeal about being bullied in school.

The subject of the movie, Jamie Nabozny a gay teenager, suffered verbal abuse in middle school that soon escalated to kicks and punches. School administrators did not address his complaints about the abuse and even blamed him for the bullying, organizers said.

Eventually, Nabozny filed a federal lawsuit against the school that led to a landmark court decision holding public schools accountable for not stopping anti-gay abuse.

Following the film, Nabozny will speak about his experience and answer questions.
