New parking meters installed in 1961

1986 — 25 years ago

Rochester native Jeff Teal bested 63 others at Olympic Hills Golf Course in the Twin Cities to qualify for the U.S. Amateur Golf Tournament.

Danelle Krueger, 12, of rural Eyota, won top honors with her Pony of America mare, "Black Swan S," at the POA national show in Oklahoma City.

1961 — 50 years ago

New parking meters are being installed in all of the 1,100 metered parking stalls in Rochester. The meters take pennies, nickels, dimes and even quarters, although the latter coin will not result in any more parking time than a dime. The new meters also have a yellow disk, which pops up automatically when the machine is out of order.

Rochester public schools received the go-ahead to develop a course of study in physical education.

1936 — 75 years ago

Because a St. Charles store had only black and red ribbons in stock one autumn day in 1897, those became the official colors of Rochester High School. During Rochester High’s first football game at St. Charles, neither side had any means of identifying either team. A Rochester team member went to a St. Charles store and bought red and black ribbons for the Rochester team to use.
