Northwest Airlines will hire RNs

1987 — 25 years ago

Michael Kannel, a senior at Lourdes High School, has been named the recipient of a 3M Merit Scholarship.

The Austin Jaycees are drumming up support to restore the historic band shell in Skinner’s Hill Park on South Main Street.

Southeastern Minnesota has been put under a fire watch, and open burning permits aren't being issued. There have been numerous grass fires in the area.

The St. Charles Jaycees club has erected warning signs at the U.S. 14 approach to Dover, near an intersection where there have been four or five fatalities in recent years.

Judy Spelhaug, of Stewartville, has been chosen as the 1962 Olmsted Dairy Princess. Vicki Lee Dehn, of Byron, is the first alternate.

1937 — 75 years ago

Northwest Airlines is hiring 18 registered nurses as air hostesses. Candidates must be between 22 and 25, not taller than 5-feet 3-inches tall and weigh less than 115 pounds. Personality and tact count more than beauty. A "hostess school" will be held in St. Paul for six weeks.

There will be an annual $100 license fee for pinball machines in Lanesboro. According to reports, 11 of the games will be operating shortly.
