Northwestern Singers season begins in September

The Northwestern Singers will begin its 2011-12 season on Sept. 12.

Rehearsals are from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday nights at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Austin from September through May. The organizers say anyone who can sing may join them.

The season includes three main performances:

• Nov. 5 is the annual benefit concert for youth music. To date NWS has raised more than $33,000 for school youth music programs.

• Jan. 21 and 22 will be the annual winter show at Paramount Theatre. The theme is "Timeless" and features favorite songs from today and time gone by.

In existence for more than 50 years in Austin, the Northwestern Singers is a mixed choral group whose members are from the Austin, Albert Lea and Rochester areas. They share a love of singing and performing. Members range in age from post high-school to 70-plus and are from many backgrounds.

Under the direction of Brock Besse, the group's repertoire includes all types of music, including Broadway, contemporary, old standards and gospel.
