On average, January was average

Snow piled up deeper last month, the temperature dropped, and winds blew, but on average, January was no big deal, according to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, Wis.

The lowest temperatures of the winter occurred in January, but thanks to unusually warm weather in the middle and at the end of the month, the average temperature was 14.1 degrees, a mere 1.8 degrees below normal. The lowest low temperature of the month was 19 below, and the highest temperature was 32.

The region experienced record snowfall in December. Another 11.3 inches of snow were added in January. That's a a bit above average but far from breaking into the top 10 for snowiest Januarys on record.
