The Dalai Lama greets members of Minnesota's Tibetan community upon arrival to the Mayo Civic Center Sept. 30 for a private gathering. The 80-year-old Tibetan Buddhist leader was at Mayo Clinic in Rochester for what his representatives have described as a routine checkup.
"They're kind of like potato chips. You can't have just a couple," says Brett Pauley, who co-owns Pauley Alpaca Company in Rochester with his wife, Jen Pauley. "They're funny creatures. Good therapy animals," says Jen of their eight Suri alpacas. The animals are sheared once annually and their fleece is used for several items, including yarn and socks. The self-described "sock snobs" hosted an open house on their farm the weekend of Sept. 26.
