Phy ed teacher inducted into hall of fame

Lynn Nelson, a physical education teacher at Pinewood and Longfellow elementary schools in Rochester, has been inducted into the inaugural class of the Fuel Up to Play 60 Hall of Fame.

Fuel Up to Play 60 is an in-school nutrition and physical activity program developed by the National Dairy Council, Midwest Dairy Council and the National Football League, in collaboration with the United States Department of Agriculture. More than 73,000 schools are involved in Fuel Up to Play 60 nationwide.

The Fuel Up to Play 60 Hall of Fame opened its doors in November 2013, and its inaugural class welcomed 39 inductees from across the country.

Schools across the country are encouraging youth to consume nutrient-dense foods (low-fat and fat-free milk and milk products, fruits, vegetables and whole grains) and achieve at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day.

"Lynn was instrumental in creating a pep fest to help raise awareness about Fuel Up to Play 60 in both her schools plus recruited other schools to get involved," said Lisa McCann RDN, health and wellness program manager for Midwest Dairy Association.

"Being a Fuel Up to Play 60 Program Advisor at two different schools gave me the opportunity to implementa grab and go breakfast, create new activities and fitness breaks in classrooms," Nelson said.
