Police arrest one in connection with shooting

Rochester police arrested a 22-year-old Rochester man Sunday afternoon, less than 12 hours after he allegedly fired shots at a party.

Officers spotted the suspect about 12:45 p.m. in a vehicle leaving 2827 Northern Valley Drive NE and initiated a traffic stop. A search warrant was later executed at the residence, said Capt. John Sherwin, but the handgun believed to have been used in the shooting wasn't found.

The investigation began about 1:15 a.m. Sunday, when several 911 calls reporting gunshots sent officers to The Edge Apartments, 863 21st Ave. SE.

People were scattering when police arrived, Sherwin said, and officers found several shell casings in the interior of the building. Surveillance video from the scene showed a man producing a gun and firing several rounds into the ceiling, he said. Police were able to identify the suspect from the video.

A party in one of the apartments "got a little larger than expected," Sherwin said, including people the host didn't know. The shooting occurred as the tenant was trying to clear the apartment; the shots were fired in the hallway.

About 90 minutes later, employees at a local hospital reported a woman had come to the emergency department with what was described as a "puncture to the knee area that was consistent with a gunshot wound," Sherwin said.

The woman didn't realize she was injured until she fell down while running away, the report says.

The Post-Bulletin typically doesn't identify suspects until they've been charged.
