BROWNSDALE — The doors to Brownsdale Elementary School may close forever depending on an upcoming public hearing.
The Hayfield Community Schools District will be hosting a public hearing at 6 p.m. Feb. 29 in the Brownsdale Elementary School's gymnasium to discuss the possibility of closing the school. There, members of the community can ask questions, and give comment on whether the school should remain open or shut down.
A regular school board meeting held on Feb. 8 included the approval of a resolution to schedule a public hearing on the question and practicability of a proposal to close Brownsdale.
"This is not a motion to close the school," the Hayfield school district's statement reads. "It is merely a motion on whether it would be appropriate to proceed with a public hearing. The motion passed. ... At the hearing, the school board will gather information from the public on whether it is both necessary and practical to close the school."
The statement emphasizes that those who wish to speak will be given the opportunity.

"Because no decision can be made until after the public hearing," the statement says, "it would be inappropriate for us to speculate further on this issue."
