REA plans first rally in 6 years

The Rochester Education Association is planning to host a rally outside the Edison Building on Tuesday before the next Rochester School Board meeting.

The event is being held as the teachers union continues to negotiate with Rochester Public Schools for a new contract. The previous two-year contract expired in June 2017.

REA President Dan Kuhlman said its the first time the union has held such a public rally in about six years. The two sides continue to haggle about teacher protections in the classroom, wage increases and other issues.

The event is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. and last until the school board meeting begins an hour later. It’s unclear how many of the 1,400 members are expected to attend, but Kuhlman hopes hundreds will turn out as a show of support.

The next bargaining session is scheduled for March 23.
