Report: 'Bay Bay' accused of firing gun into apartment

WINONA — A man who reportedly calls himself "Bay Bay Da Shoota" posted $15,000 conditional bond Wednesday, five days after authorities say he fired a gun into the air — then toward a group of people.

Jaquann Oshay Hughes, 22, who provided a Chicago address, was arrested Friday night after the shooting and charged Monday in Winona County District Court with two felony counts of dangerous weapons violation.

He's due back in court May 1.

The investigation began about 9 p.m. April 14 with a report of gunshots near Maplewood Townhomes on Kraemer Drive. An officer spoke with a woman who said that "a boy people called 'Bay Bay' came out of one of the apartment buildings, stood next to a tree" and fired two rounds from a pistol into the air, the complaint says.

The woman said the man then allegedly pointed the gun at a crowd and continued shooting.

Though no firearms were found in the area, three .40 caliber shell casings were found. A bullet was recovered from the wall of an apartment, about a foot away from where a small child was lying in bed, court documents say.

Officers viewed a Facebook page for "Bay Bay Da Shoota" and recognized Hughes, the document continues. When an officer approached Hughes, he called out, "Bay Bay!" Hughes stopped and looked at the officer, the report says.

He was arrested, but denied going by the nickname "Bay Bay," and said he hadn't held a gun since 2012.

A second witness said Hughes and another man were having a disagreement when she heard the gunshots, but didn't see what had happened.
