Report: Man steals gun, shoots himself in foot

A 19-year-old Rochester man was injured early Saturday after police say he shot himself in the foot.

Officers were called to a local hospital emergency department about 4:15 a.m. for a report of a gunshot wound, said Capt. John Sherwin. There, the injured man initially said he'd been shot at a party that night, the report says.

Eventually, he admitted he'd visited a friend who was house sitting; while there, he found a gun in a drawer in the home — and stole it.

He was later driving and handling the gun when it discharged, striking him in the left foot. The round, which went completely through his foot, resulting in a broken bone.

The gun hasn't been recovered, Sherwin said. The man claimed he'd thrown it in the snow near his home; blood at the scene indicated the man was likely there, but even with the help of metal detectors, no weapon was found.

The man, who admitted the incident was "probably karma" for stealing the gun, faces criminal charges, Sherwin said.
