Rochester advances to Sweet 16 in Outside's 'Best City' competition

Rochester scored its second straight upset to advance to the Sweet 16 of Outside Magazine's "Best Towns" Tournament.

The Med City finished with 70.7 percent of the vote when polls closed Wednesday night to knock off Yellow Springs, Ohio, the Midwest region's No. 3 seed. Rochester, the No. 11 seed, already knocked off No. 6 Bellaire, Mich., in the opening round.

The Cinderella story continues today with Rochester squaring off with No. 10 Eau Claire, Wis. Polls are open through May 18. Eau Claire already enjoyed a 900-vote lead as of 9 a.m. this morning.

The magazine touts Rochester for having "cultivated green spaces like Chester Woods Park, Quarry Hill Nature Center, and Cascade Meadow Wetlands," along with 85 miles of paved bike trails.

Ely, the No. 1 seed in the Midwest, was knocked out of the competition on Wednesday. The only other Minnesota city to get nominated in the 64-city tournament lost to No. 9 Spearfish, S.D., by less than 100 votes.
