WESTBY, Wis. — A 12-year-old Rochester boy died Saturday in an ATV rollover north of Westby in Vernon County, according to the La Crosse Tribune.
A 14-year-old Stoddard, Wis., male was driving the ATV on private property in the town of Christiana about 12:45 p.m. and following another ATV in the woods when the first ATV encountered a log while traveling downhill on a curve, the Vernon County Sheriff’s Department says.
The 14-year-old lost control of the ATV trying to brake on the slippery trail and it rolled against a tree, pinning the driver and passenger.
The 12-year-old had severe chest trauma and was flown to Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, where he later died. The driver was not injured.
No names have been released. The crash remains under investigation by the state Department of Natural Resources.
