Forgive Joshua and Heather Robinson for feeling a little awkward about publicly disclosing their personal story. "It's really bizarre to be so open about such a private subject," said Heather.

Josh and Heather Robinson, of Rochester, attend a fundraiser Saturday at Boomer's Lounge to raise money to adopt a child.

Forgive Joshua and Heather Robinson for feeling a little awkward about publicly disclosing their personal story.

"It's really bizarre to be so open about such a private subject," said Heather.

The local couple already spent thousands of dollars trying to have a baby of their own. But none of those efforts panned out. So, in July, the pair decided to adopt.

Their prior efforts left them struggling to afford the typical U.S.cost of adoption, which generally ends up at about $20,000, the Robinsons say.

To offset that cost, the couple held a public fundraiser Saturday to cobble together money, hoping to adopt soon. They shared the event on social media, with friends and acquaintances because, "there's somebody out there who needs a mom," Heather said.

The fundraiser at Boomer's in northwest Rochester drew a big crowd, and the Robinsons said they were pleased.

"It's overwhelming. I just feel blessed," said Joshua.

Heather said the pair "will love that child endlessly for the rest of our lives."

It is there the Robinsons share their feelings about adoption.

"It is difficult to describe the invisible grasp infertility has held these past years. Not only the financial strain, but the emotional exhaustion has humbled us both," they write. "It is with open hearts, love and hope that we look forward to enjoying the single most wonderful joy: becoming parents."
