School Children collect $160 for UNICEF

1987 — 25 years ago

Democratic presidential hopeful Jesse Jackson appeared at Darrell and Arlys Wiese’s dairy farm to address a crowd of about 1,000 people. Jackson said he has stood with Minnesota farmers facing foreclosures and with Geo. A. Hormel & Co. workers embroiled in a labor dispute.

Barlow Foods kicked off its third annual pre-Thanksgiving food drive to help Channel One collect food for at least 26,000 holiday meals for the needy.

1962 — 50 years ago

Paul and Marion Miller, nationally known undercover agents for the FBI, addressed Lourdes High School students and faculty. The couple told the students that the way to win against communism is by living up to the high moral ideals of their religion.

For the ninth consecutive year, Washington Elementary School is sending a contribution to the United Nations International Children’s Fund (UNICEF). $160 was collected at Halloween by the students.

   

1937 — 75 years ago

Thurber’s Sweet Shop, 19 Second St. S.W., has a new Coca-Cola dispenser. Everyone is invited to stop in and see it.

A squad of 16 Rochester Junior College basketball candidates reported for the first day of practice in the school gymnasium. Coach Jim Clark reports he will have seven returning lettermen.
