School supplies sought for low-income families

The United Way of Olmsted County is kicking off a community initiative, Running Start for School, by asking local businesses, faith organizations and community groups to partner in an effort to collect school supplies for lower-income families for next school year.

Some 130 businesses and community organizations worked together last year to provide school supplies for more than 2,200 students in Olmsted County. This year, there are more than 6,300 students eligible to receive supplies for the upcoming school year. Running Start for School’s 2010 goal is to distribute supplies to 2,500 students with help from partner organizations.

Registration to help with the effort or to receive free school supplies is available at www.uwolmsted.org/runningstart . More information is also available by calling Nathan Watson at 287-1958.
