Senior Center starts walking program

Mower County seniors are hitting the road. Or more accurately, they are hitting the sidewalk.

A walking program at the Mower County Senior Center has members walking every Tuesday and Thursday morning.

Tuesdays are for beginner "destination" walkers and they go about a mile to destinations like the Paramount Theatre and Spam Museum. Thursdays are for intermediate walkers and they walk around Mill Pond.

Senior Center executive director Sara Schafer came up with the idea, along with input from walking group leader Jessica Wendroth. The program started earlier this month.

"We wanted to make it fun," Shafer said. "There are a lot of fun places to walk to that are close to the Senior Center. People enjoy it because they don't have to walk alone and it's good exercise."

On Tuesday, four walkers made their way to the Spam Museum, toured it and walked back.

"We walk to interesting places in Austin and tour them so there's a break in the middle," Wendroth said. "It's more fun rather than walking alone."

Schafer says the number of walkers is growing and even more people have expressed interest.

"The more I talk to the seniors in the building," she said, "the more they want to be involved."
