Seven vehicles reported stolen over weekend

Rochester police are investigating several motor vehicle thefts over the weekend, Capt. John Sherwin said.

"There's really no rhyme or reason to them," he said, though it's a much higher number than usual. Seven vehicles were stolen from all over town, and had been parked on the street, at a mall, at Walmart North and at the Kwik Trip on 20th Street and South Broadway.

The car at Kwik Trip had been left running when the owner went inside, Sherwin said. It's been recovered in Watertown, S.D. with a Rochester man inside. The man remains in custody in South Dakota.

It's a reminder to drivers — especially with the recent frigid temperatures — not to leave cars running and unattended, Sherwin said.

Several of the other stolen vehicles had the keys inside, he said.
