MONTICELLO — Some Minnesota school districts are scrapping the traditional spring break in favor of extended weekends.
The Monticello school district is dropping a week of spring break in favor of a long weekend in April. Roseau is opting for a weekend break to coincide with the annual high school hockey tournament in St. Paul. Families in Minneapolis are being asked to respond to a survey that asks if they want an abbreviated spring break in favor of a shorter school year.
Lee Hurd, whose daughter is a senior at Sartell High School, says he's concerned about taking away the opportunity for charitable or mission work in foreign countries. Hurd is leading a group to the Dominican Republic this spring to set up basketball courts for underprivileged children.
