ST. PAUL — The St. Paul City Council will consider settling a police brutality claim for $95,000.
The city attorney is recommending the council settle the case involving Thomas Nelson. The 30-year-old man fled from officers into a relative's apartment in January 2012 when they stopped to investigate a suspicious vehicle.
A criminal complaint charging Nelson with assault says he punched an officer in the face in the apartment, but the charge was later dismissed. Nelson says officers used their fists, feet and a flashlight to injure him.
City Attorney Sara Grewing recommends settlement to avoid the high cost of litigation and attorney's fees, but does not admit liability.
Council members are expected to take up the matter Wednesday.
