SUV totaled after Saturday fire; no foul play suspected

Austin police said they do not suspect foul play in a vehicle fire in southwest Austin on Saturday.

The fire in the 1500 block of Second Avenue Southwest was reported at 4:29 a.m. Saturday. Austin firefighters arrived shortly afterward to find the vehicle engulfed in flames, Austin Police Detective Brian Krueger said.

Police smashed out the driver's window to determine if anyone was inside the SUV; it was empty. They later found the vehicle's owner, a 29 year-old Austin man who had no knowledge of the fire, Krueger said.

The fire is believed to have started in the vehicle's engine compartment and spread past the firewall into the passenger area. Firefighters cleared the scene at 5:08 a.m.

Krueger estimated the SUV is a total loss.
