Target practice leaves bullet holes in house

STEWARTVILLE — No one was injured Sunday in an incident one official called a reminder for "smart shooting."

Olmsted County Sheriff's Office deputies were called about 11 a.m. to the 2200 block of Petersen Drive Northwest in Stewartville. A homeowner there said he'd heard his house being hit by what he thought were bullets; when he investigated, he found four holes in the siding of the home.

Deputies in the area found two men not far away, sighting their .223 caliber rifles.

"They thought they had a safe backdrop," said Capt. Scott Behrns, "and were genuinely surprised and apologetic" that the rounds had missed the target and berm.

It's legal to shoot in the township, he said, and it's unlikely any charges will be filed.
