Team pulls the 'upset of the year' in 1950

1990 — Twenty years ago

The 407th Civil Affairs Co. of the Army Reserve, based in Winona, has been called to active duty in support of Operation Desert Shield.

Fourteen area high school choirs will be featured on KWEB’s annual Christmas music broadcast.

1970 — 40 years ago

The Olmsted County Board approved a request from Sheriff-elect Charles VonWald to buy a snowmobile and trailer. The sheriff's department will institute a snowmobile patrol. The department has already received 19 complaints about snowmobilers this season.

1950 — 60 years ago

Dr. and Mrs. Philip Hench, their four children and Mrs. John Kahler will arrive in Rochester today from a trip to Sweden. Dr. Hench and Dr. Edward Kendall received the Nobel Prize for medicine on Dec. 10. They were honored for their work on the discovery and development of cortisone.

In the "upset of the year," the Dodge Center boys basketball team won its first game of the season by beating undefeated Hayfield 55-53. Dick Osborn had 30 points in the upset.
