Thursday is a day for magic

Reza, a world-famous illusionist, will perform his family friendly show on Thursday at Austin's Paramount Theatre.

Reza is touring the Midwest, focusing on intimate venues such as the Paramount.

Ever since Reza was 6 years old, he knew he wanted to be an illusionist. By 15, he had the opportunity to open for a number of magic shows and perform a six-week tour in Branson, Mo., where he developed his unique show.

"At that age, I was able to get a feel for my presence on stage and develop my own look," Reza said.

Reza's concert-style show mixes his original illusions, audience participation and comedy.

"It’s a fast-paced show with 15,000 pounds of lighting, so it’s a great time," Reza said. "This will be the same show we perform in Denver, New York, L.A. and Chicago, and we wanted to bring it to the Midwest, where I’m from."

The magic tricks include passing himself through 300 pounds of diamond-plated steel, making a beautiful assistant vanish at the tip of razor sharp spikes and a one-in-a-billion prediction made a year in advance about the thoughts of randomly selected audience members.

Reza not only strives to be original but also to change the world’s perception of magic.

"Magic often takes the perception of being corny or cheesy, and we want to break this mold," Reza said. "I take my inspiration from music, movies, pop culture and also from dreams. I want to make the show relatable."

He makes his show relatable by involving the audience. There are opportunities for audience members to come on stage and see the magic tricks up close and also for audience members to stay in their seats and be involved.

"There are a lot of audience members that get the opportunity to become involved, but it’s strictly volunteer," Reza said. "I want the audience to feel like they’re a part of the show from the very beginning."

Future plans for Reza include a reality show that lets the world take a peek behind the curtain of the life of a magician.
