Traffic stop leads to discovery of prescription drugs

A 38-year-old Rochester man is expected to appear today in Olmsted County District Court after authorities say he was found with multiple forms of narcotics.

The incident began at 1:35 a.m. Tuesday after a traffic stop in the 1300 block of Third Avenue Southeast; the police officer believed the driver was under the influence, said Capt. Scott Behrns of the Olmsted County Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's drug recognition expert was called to the scene and determined the man was under the influence of a controlled substance, the report says. He was arrested at the scene.

A subsequent search of the man and his vehicle allegedly turned up nearly 70 tablets of opiate-based prescription medication and nine packages of suboxone, an opiate-based medication in the form of a film that dissolves in the mouth. In addition, the man admitted to drinking a mix of codeine-based cough syrup and soda, Behrns said.

The tablets can fetch up to $30 each on the street, he said.
