Rochester police are investigating what appears to be a ring of counterfeiters after a business reported receiving $20 bills Monday.
Officers responded about 7:30 p.m. to the Walgreen's on South Broadway and 14th Street Southwest, where an employee told them three people had entered the store and attempted to make separate purchases.
The first sale — of less than $40 — was successful, the report says, but the clerk became suspicious of the bill used by the second suspect. The woman trying to pass the bill grabbed it from the clerk, said Capt. John Sherwin, and left the store. The third person in line also left, without attempting to make a purchase.
One of the suspects was described as a black male in his 30s, 5 feet, 9 inches tall, with a muscular build. One of the two women with him is described as a black female in her late 20s or early 30s, 5 feet, 5 inches tall, with long hair and a heavy build. No description was available for the other woman.
Two other people were waiting in the parking lot in a silver car, Sherwin said. Police are reviewing the surveillance video for more information.
