Unemployment at 3.9% in 1986

Olmsted County’s unemployment rate in November 1986 was 3.9 percent, the lowest rate in the 11-county region.

Lisa Marie King, a senior at Southland High School, was crowned Miss Austin 1987.

1962 — 50 years ago

Judy Opfer, current Miss Rochester, will be among the contestants in the Miss Majorette of America competition. About 50 area baton twirlers and instructors from the area will attend the events in St. Paul.

1937 — 75 years ago

The Olmsted County Chapter of the Red Cross has raised $500 to help in the flood areas around the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. It is estimated that more than 400,000 people have been driven from their homes.

John Kirkeby, a star athlete at St. Olaf College in Northfield, has been hired to take over coaching duties at Preston High School.
