United Way of Olmsted County kicked off its annual Running Start for School initiative on Thursday.
Running Start for School, in its 15th year, aims to collect backpacks and school supplies for children who might not be able to afford them.
"United Way is committed to helping children and youth reach their potential. Running Start for School is one of the many ways we're uniting the community to creating lasting change and improve lives," United Way President Jerome Ferson said in a prepared statement.
Some 8,400 children in Olmsted County are unable to afford basic school supplies. United Way will be collecting supplies at several sites throughout the community through July 24, and more than 900 volunteers are needed to sort supplies, assemble school kits and assist with distribution. For more information, contact Miranda Halling at (507) 535-5503.
School supply distribution will take place in the late summer in Byron, Stewartville, Pine Island and four locations in Rochester.
