RED WING — Prairie Island Nuclear Power Plant in north Red Wing declared a notification of an unusual event at 2:18 p.m. Wednesday because of the temporary failure of some security equipment.
No radioactive material was released, and there was no danger to the public, according Xcel Energy, which owns the plant. The equipment was restored; plant security was maintained throughout the event.
Notification of an unusual event is the lowest of four emergency classifications, indicating a potential reduction in the safety level but no threat to the public.
