Watch out — drug delivered to jail in timepiece

A 53-year-old Rochester man is in custody today after staff at the Olmsted County Adult Detention Center noticed some strange deliveries during the past week: wrist watches.

The staff alerted task force investigators, who set up surveillance after learning the suspect was scheduled to come to the jail Tuesday with another watch, said Capt. Scott Behrns.

The man came in and dropped off the watch — which was immediately taken apart, the report says. Hidden in the back was 1.1 grams of methamphetamine, Behrns said.

Three watches had been brought to the same detainee; one was delivered to another detainee, he said. A woman also is being sought in connection with the alleged crime.

There's been no restriction on bringing watches to the ADC, Behrns said, "until now," adding any items deemed "personal" are always subject to search.

The man faces multiple charges, he added. The Post-Bulletin typically doesn't identify suspects until they've been charged.
