Witness grabs bat, stops armed assault

No one was injured early Wednesday in an apparent armed robbery attempt that was foiled by a neighbor with a baseball bat, police said today.

According to the report, a 20-year-old female and 19-year-old male were walking home about 2:30 a.m. in the 3400 block of 22nd Avenue Northwest when they were approached by a man in a ski mask who was armed with a handgun.

The man demanded their money, said Capt. John Sherwin, but the 19-year-old instead began to struggle with the suspect. A neighbor heard the commotion, grabbed a baseball bat and went to investigate.

He saw the struggle, Sherwin said, and got their attention from inside the building; the suspect then ran off.

The male victim's cell phone was broken in the incident, the report says, but he didn't report any injuries.

There was no description of the suspect.
