Would-be robber leaves empty-handed

Police are searching for a man who attempted to rob a Rochester business early this morning, officials said.

The call came in at 1:33 a.m., sending officers to Perkins Restaurant and Bakery, 1818 Broadway Ave. South.

There, an employee said a man walked up to the register and laid his cell phone on the counter. It's not unusual, she said, for customers with disabilities to communicate via written messages on their phones, so she picked it up.

Instead of a food order, the message indicated it was a robbery and ordered the employee to give the suspect everything in the register.

When the employee told him she couldn't open the register, he left the store empty-handed, fleeing north on Broadway in a silver Grand-Am-style vehicle, said Capt. John Sherwin.

The suspect is described as an Asian male, 20-25 years old, standing 5 feet 4 inches to 5 feet 7, with a stocky build. He was wearing a white hoodie, the report says.
