David Leo Anderson — Rochester

David Leo Anderson, 91, died peacefully at Cottagewood Senior Living Thursday, April17, 2014. He was born Oct. 13, 1922, in Rochester.

David graduated from Rochester High School in 1941. He enlisted in the Army AirCorps in 1942 and served during World War II campaigns in Bismarck Archipelago,New Guinea, Philippines and Luzon as technician fifth class. He received ribbons and commendations.

David attended Midland Linotype School in Charles City Iowa. He married PhyllisL. Burgan on June 15, 1946, in Rochester. The couple made their home in El Dora, Iowa, from 1946 to 1948, then moved to Sibley, Iowa, where he worked at the city newspapers. In 1953, they returned to Rochester. David worked at Whiting Press andRochester Post-Bulletin as a compositor, retiring in 1987. Phyllis died Jan. 12, 1991.

David was very proud of his service in World War II and documented his experiences for the World War II Museum in New Orleans. He traveled to Washington, D.C., in 2004 to see The World War II Memorial. He also visited the Air Force Museum in Ohio. He was proud to support the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center in Superior, Wis. David was a long-standing member of the American Legion.

He was an original member of Real Life Cooperative and called it home for 18 years. He valued the new friends and opportunities.

David loved spending time with his family, on vacations, weekend camping and a Sunday drive. He drove his grandchildren off to college and was there when theygraduated and bought their first car. He attended countless ballet recitals and orchestra concerts. He spent Christmas with his great-grandchildren. David touched the lives of many people. We are all richer for having had him with us.

He was one of three children born to the late Leo and Avis Anderson. He is survived by his sister, Shirley Schnug and predeceased by sister, Cecelia (Billie) Yates.

David will forever be remembered by his children, Judy Meyer, Mark Anderson (Jane) and Bruce Anderson (Janet); grandchildren, Matthew Meyer (Heidi), Erin Schumacher (Ryan), Laura Anderson and Linda Anderson; and great-grandchildren, Andrew Schumacher,Allison Schumacher and Madeline Meyer along with other friends and family whomwere blessed to know him.

David's family expresses our grateful appreciation to Dr. Thomas Poterucha and Mayo Clinic, Cottagewood Senior Living staff, Seasons Hospice and Mark Johnson from Audibel Hearing for their wonderful care for our father.

A family interment service will be held at Oakwood Cemetery.
