Dennis Murphy — Fairmont

Memorial service for Dennis P. Murphy, 74, of Fairmont, will be at 11 a.m. Feb. 20 at the Fairmont High School Gymnasium in Fairmont. Visitation will be on Feb. 19 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont, and will continue one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the high school gymnasium.

Dennis passed away Jan. 26, 2016, at his home in Fairmont. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the Fairmont Chapter of Dollars for Scholars. The Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service is assisting the family with arrangements.

Dennis "Murph" Patrick Murphy was born in Green Bay, Wis., on Dec. 27, 1941. The family moved to Kasson when he was 7 years old. He attended Kasson public schools and graduated from Kasson-Mantorville High School in 1959. Murph was interested in journalism, and during his high school and college years, he worked at the Dodge County Independent, writing articles for the local newspaper. He graduated from Mankato State Teachers College and remained a middle school English teacher and basketball coach throughout his career, retiring in 2010 after teaching in Fairmont for 45 years.

Murph enjoyed outdoor sports, including snowmobiling, fishing, hunting, and attending Twins baseball games. He was very active in the community, belonging to several local organizations.

He is survived by his sister, Kathleen (Rodney) Bailey, and brothers, Timothy Murphy and Kevin (Hilary) Murphy; several nieces and nephews; other extended family; and many friends.

Dennis is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Helen Murphy, and sister-in-law, Linda Murphy.
