Eleanor Bernard, age 87, of Spring Valley, died Saturday March 3, 2018, at her home surrounded by family.
Funeral Services for Eleanor Bernard will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 8, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church with Pastor Betsy Dartt officiating. Burial will be in Washington Cemetery in the spring. Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, at the Hindt Funeral Home in Spring Valley and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
Eleanor Ruth Zimmerman was born Oct. 25, 1930, to Rolland and Helen (King) Zimmerman in Racine. She attended and graduated from Stewartville High School in 1948. After graduation, Eleanor attended North Central College in Naperville, Ill., graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics and Teaching in 1952.
On March 30, 1953, she was united in marriage to Leo Bernard at the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Racine. Eleanor and Leo moved to their farm in rural Spring Valley in 1962, where they farmed and raised their family.
Eleanor loved reading, taking pictures, decorating, and needlework. She enjoyed spending time in her garden. Eleanor was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother; her family was her pride and joy.
She was a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary being active for many years. She worked for many years to help collect charitable contributions for the Frankford Township.
Eleanor is survived by her husband, Leo of Spring Valley; children, Kathy (Curt) Oynes of Sioux City, Iowa, Karen (Herbert) Hill of Abbeville, S.C., Dick (Julie) Bernard of Overland Park, Kan., and Diane (Glen) Mills of Marine on St. Croix, Minn.; grandchildren, Jackie Mills, Tom Mills, John Oynes, Patrick Bernard, Maggie Bernard, Molly Bernard, and Katie Bernard; and one brother, Don Zimmerman of Racine.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Lawrence Zimmerman.
