Harold Wesley Hermann, 91, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, Aug. 4, 2014, at Rex Healthcare, Raleigh, N.C.
Harold was born Dec. 25, 1922, in a farmhouse near Zumbro Falls, north of Rochester, to the late Henry Herbert and Mina Evelyn Pencille Hermann. Harold was led to Christ by his father at a campground meeting in Iowa. He was raised in a Christian home with daily family Bible reading and prayer.
Harold attended high school in Rochester. Influenced by the strong educational environment of the Mayo Clinic, Harold pursued his passion for medicine by attending Macalester College for his bachelor's degree and the University of Minnesota for his Medical degree.
Harold enlisted in the Navy and was selected to participate in the V12 program during World War II. Hewas a captain in the Army Reserve during the Korean War.
During medical school, he met Marie Lois Thistle who was a surgical nurse. They married in 1945, raised five children and had a beautiful life together serving the Lord.
Harold practiced pediatrics in Minneapolis for 18 years. Thereafter, he joined Mead Johnson and Co., Evansville, Ind., where he conducted pharmaceutical and nutritional research for 17 years. He retired from that vocation in 1983 as vice president and medical director of the Nutritional Division. He and Marie moved to San Diego, Calif., for their retirement.
After Marie's death in 1989, he married Charlotte Rose Anderson, a family friend who shared their love of Christ. In 2011, Charlotte passed away, and Harold moved to Raleigh, N.C., to be near his family.
Harold served as secretary of Christian Medical Society. He served as board member, officer or elder with several churches and chairman of "Religion and Medicine" Committee of MN State Medical Society. He supported and served on boards of many Christian organizations and missions.
Harold was preceded in death by his first wife of 44 years, Marie Thistle Hermann; his second wife of 21 years, Charlotte Rose Anderson Hermann; and siblings, William Hermann and Lois Chilson Sollie.
Harold is survived by his five children, Jane (Clint) Hoxie, Interlochen, Mich., John (Lori) Hermann, LaPorte, Ind., Paul (Sandy) Hermann, Evansville, Ind., Robert (Chris) Hermann, Raleigh N.C., and Ruth (Bruce) McDonald, Indianapolis, Ind.; 11 grandchildren, Ember Keck, Shannon Erhart, Danny Orszulak Jr., Brendan Hermann, Gwynneth Reitz, Scott Hermann, Brittany Spragins, Meredith Hermann, Libby Pike, Peter McDonald and Emily McClelland; 12 great-grandchildren; and a brother, George (LaVonne) Hermann, Rochester. Harold is also survived by Charlotte's children, Bonnie (Don) Phelps and Tom (Penny) Anderson, California; and two grandsons.
Harold's wishes were to be cremated and his ashes to be spread at sea to "touch all mission fields of the world."
A memorial service to celebrate Harold's life will be held at South Troy Church, U.S. 63, Zumbro Falls, MN 55991, on Saturday, Aug. 30, at 1 p.m.
