Jean Carter -- Plainview

Jean Ann Carter, 97, died Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at Mayo Clinic Hospital-Rochester, Saint Marys Campus.

Jean was born in Plainview on May 1, 1919, to Anna (Kimberly) and Henry Lehnertz. She graduated from Plainview High School in 1937 and Winona State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education. Jean taught school for 30 years, 28 in the Plainview school system, retiring in 1984.

On Dec. 6, 1941, she married William C. Carter in Rochester. Mr. Carter died Feb. 24, 1971.

Jean was a member of St. Joachim's Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters and sang in the church choir. Organizations she belonged to include MEA, NEA, REAM, Rochester Methodist Hospital Auxiliary, Hillcrest Nursing Home Auxiliary, Wabasha Hospice Group, Plainview American Legion Auxiliary and Paws & Claws. Jean loved reading, crossword puzzles, her dogs and cats, trying new recipes, gardening, being with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She had many hobbies, including knitting, crocheting, music, sewing and playing cards

She is survived by her three children, William M. (Carol) Carter of Mantorville, Cindy (Rodney) Phipps of Omaha, Neb., Christopher (Martha) Carter of Plainview; seven grandchildren, Cherrise, Jessica, William Henry (B.J.), Christian, Justin, Michael, and Benjamin; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William C. Carter; sister, Florence Lehnertz; and brothers, Dale and Earl Lehnertz.

Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday, April 21, at St. Joachim's Catholic Church in Plainview, with Father William Becker officiating. Burial is at St. Joachim's Cemetery. Visitation is one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Paws & Claws or the Plainview Public Library.
