John David Borgschatz — Byron
John David Borgschatz, 79, of rural Byron, died from complications of Parkinson's at Saint Marys Hospital Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, surrounded by his family.
He was born June 1, 1934, to William and Emma Borgschatz and raised on the family farm in rural Goodhue County. He graduated from Zumbrota High School in 1952. John began working at IBM in 1958 and was drafted into the Army that same year.Upon return, he resumed his employment and married Janice Rud on June 25, 1960. He bought a farm in rural Byron in 1966 where he raised his family. John retired from IBM and farming in 1986.
He was a member of the Byron American Legion and the Byron community.
In his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, attending his grandchildren's school and athletic events. He was an avid Minnesota sports fan and enjoyed telling a story or a joke to his friends to bring a smile to their faces.
John is survived by his children, Lori (Wayne) Sonnier of Mazeppa, Jim (Mary) Borgschatz of Lake City and Cathy Borgschatz of Hammond, Wis.; four grandsons; four great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons; and a special friend, Sharon Ness of Kasson.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Janice Borgschatz in 2005; son, Lon Borgschatz in 2012; parents, William and Emma Borgschatz; four brothers and one sister.
A funeral service will be held Friday, Jan. 3, at 11 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in Byron, with the Rev. Steve Rheingans officiating. Burial will be in East St. Olaf Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Rochester Chapel. Friends may also call one hour before the service at the church.
