LeRoy O. Flatness — Sun City, Texas

LeRoy O. Flatness, 85, died peacefully in his sleep Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014, at his home in Sun City, Texas.

LeRoy was born May 27, 1928, in Parshall, N.D., to Lawrence and Florence Flatness. After high school, LeRoy served two years in the Navy. He graduated from Minot State University in 1952, with degrees in math and science and went on to teach at Riverdale High School in Riverdale, N.D. He joined IBM in 1955, working in Minneapolis, Omaha, Neb., Alexandria, Va., Dayton, Ohio, Rochester and Austin, Texas, retiring after 35 years.

LeRoy was a long-standing member of Redeemer Lutheran Church. Faith and love for his family were his greatest pleasures. He was an avid football fan and an Eagle Scout. He was a founding member of the Computer Club at Sun City. Genealogy, coin and stamp collecting were among his many hobbies and interests.

LeRoy was predeceased by his parents as well as his only sibling, his brother, Hugh Flatness.

He is survived by his loving wife, Pauline (Balerud) Flatness, of 63 years; three children, Mark, of Pflugerville, Texas, Joan (Mark) Hopkins, of Boise, Idaho, and Scott, of Austin, Texas; grandchildren, Stephanie (Luke) Thompson, Sarah (Noah) Hird Reid and Katie Hird; and great-grandchildren, Audrey and Jack Thompson and Cormac Hird Reid.

A memorial service to celebrate LeRoy's life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 27, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas.
