Lois Marion Arneson was born on Jan. 9, 1923, to Emma and Joseph Arneson, in Canton. She was raised on the family farm in Lenora and graduated from Canton High School in 1940. She graduated from the Kahler Hospital School of Nursing in 1945 as a registered nurse, then served in the Army during World War II as a second lieutenant for two years. She graduated from St. Olaf College in 1952 with a B.A. in nursing. She then returned to Rochester to resume a career in nursing and stayed there the rest of her life.
During her career, she worked as a head nurse and supervisor, and finally as a teacher at the Kahler School of Nursing until 1970. She then joined the Rochester Community College staff, retiring in 1985.
On Nov. 20, 1971, she married Leon Winch in Henrytown. They enjoyed their cabin on Three Island Lake and many travels together. She was very proud of her heritage and had many family stories and recipes to share, particularly lefse and sandbakkelse. She was a member of Zumbro Lutheran Church, WELCA Society, the Kahler Nursing Alumni Association and Rochester Senior Citizens.
Lois enjoyed her eight years in her apartment at the Charter House. We would like to give a special thank you to all the staff on the second floor assisted living unit, Mayo hospice care and Home Instead, who all showed exceptional care and love to Lois during her battle with cancer.
She is survived by a stepson, Roger (Marsha) Winch; two step-grandchildren, Jeramie Winch and Heidi Campbell, all of Stewartville and Rochester; step-great-grandchildren; four nephews, Keith (Nancy) Arneson of Victoria, Minn., Blaine (Nancy) Arneson of Austin, Ross (Barb) Arneson of Mankato, and Jay (Robin Jacobs) Arneson of St. Louis Park, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a brother and sister-in-law, Leland and Doris Arneson.
