Mary Spencer — Wabasha

Mary "Bright" Spencer, 65, of Wabasha, passed away peacefully Aug. 25, 2015.

Bright was born Feb. 25, 1950, in Chicago, to John and Dorothy (Ambrose) Durkin. She graduated from Thornton Community College with an associates degree in applied science and electronics engineering. Bright was a strong advocate for the environment, including working with the Lake Michigan Federation and as an adviser to the Chemical Manufacturing Association, helping to develop Responsible Care that is now effective in more than 50 countries.

Bright was a talented artist who enjoyed painting, writing and teaching art to first- through fifth-graders during after-school programs at the University of Chicago Lab Schools. Bright also taught art at the Northfield Senior Center in Northfield.

Bright approached life with exuberance and wonder until the end. Those who knew her will cherish her ongoing influence and inspiration.

Bright is survived by her husband, Douglas; sisters, Tony and Patricia; nieces; nephews; and many friends.

A gathering of friends and family to celebrate Bright's life will be held at the Spencer home in Wabasha on Saturday, Aug. 29, 2015, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Please call 651-347-1580 for directions, if needed.
