Michael Birka -- Arlington, Texas
Michael Anthony Birka passed away on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2018, in the arms of his brother, David.
He was born in Dubuque, Iowa, on July 27, 1955, to Donald and Lavona Bonnie (Serna) Birka. He grew up in Rochester with his brother, David, and his sister, Donna. He attended John Marshall Senior High School and graduated in 1974.
Mike joined the U.S. Navy and went to the U.S. Naval base in San Diego. He became a combat engineer and was with the Seabees unit until 1978. He was a Spec 4 with the U.S. Army from 1982 to 1984. In 1982, he studied marketing and international business at St. Cloud State University.
Mike married Ann Mullenbach from La Crosse, Wis., on April 27, 1985. They moved to Seattle, where he worked for Hormel Packing Co., while Ann worked at the V.A. hospital. In 1986, they moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. In 1990, they moved to Arlington, Texas, where their two sons, Garret and Grayson, were born. Mike was a National Account Manager for Pactiv.
Mike enjoyed many sports, including football, hockey, soccer, martial arts, fishing, and boating. He had many friends and often interacted with them on Facebook.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Bonnie Birka.
Michael is survived by his wife, Ann; two sons, Garret and Grayson; his brother, David and daughter Kendra; his sister, Donna and Wayne Peil; mother- and father-in-law, Betty and Bernard Mullenbach; two sisters-in-law, Carol McCuen and Beth Elgethun; one brother-in-law, Daniel Mullenbach and wife Cece and son Jared.
Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today, Oct. 18, at the Wade Funeral Home, 4140 W. Pioneer Pkwy Arlington, TX, followed by a Rosary from 7:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
A Celebration of Life with Reception will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19 at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 5819 W Pleasant Ridge Road. Arlington, TX, followed by a procession to the National Cemetery in Arlington, Texas.
