Mildred E. Meyer — Caledonia
Mildred E. Meyer, 99, formerly of Caledonia, passed away Saturday, June 7, 2014, at Tweeten Lutheran Healthcare Center in Spring Grove.
She was born Oct. 24, 1914, in rural Spring Grove, to Thorvald and Nina (Anderson) Solberg. Mildred was baptized and confirmed at the Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Church in Spring Grove. She attended grade school in rural Black Hammer Township and high school in Spring Grove. On Oct. 18, 1932, Mildred was united in marriage to Albert Meyer, and they made their home on the Meyer Homestead in Wilmington Township in rural Eitzen until 1956 when they built their new home and moved into the city of Caledonia. Mildred went to work for the Caledonia Public School System as a cook for 18 years.
She was a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ in Eitzen, where she took part in the work of the church, serving on committees and with the Church Women United. Mildred also participated with the Caledonia PTA, Farm Bureau, and was a charter leader of the Portland Prairie 4-H Program, which was one of the county's first clubs. She enjoyed the time spent with her birthday club for over 60 years, Portland Prairie PDQ and homemaker's club, quilting, doing crafts and refinishing furniture which she gave as heirlooms to be handed down to her family. Mildred also enjoyed traveling with her husband and spending time with her family. In her later years, she loved spending time with the Caledonia Senior Citizens Group, her friends at Loretto Heritage Haven in Caledonia, and lastly, all her friends at Tweeten Lutheran Healthcare Center in Spring Grove.
Survivors include her three children, Richard (Shirley) Meyer of Ridgeway, Iowa, Mary (Harold "Curly") Johnson of Shakopee and Donna Nelson of Rochester; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and one due in August; five great-great-grandchildren; and many wonderful nieces and nephews and beloved friends.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Albert, on Feb. 21, 1995; her son-in-law, Tom; two sisters; and five brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 12, at St. Luke's United Church of Christ in Eitzen. Pastor Michael D. McCann will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of service Thursday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
