Nel K. Overton - Byron

Nel Overton, 73, died Sunday, April 1, 2012, at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester, surrounded by her loving family.

Nel was born Oct. 18, 1938, in Stewartville, the daughter of Peter and Sarah (Benjamin) Zierath. She graduated from Rochester High School in 1957. On May 2, 1958, she was united in marriage to Darrel Overton. The young couple lived in Rochester for 18 years before moving to Byron in 1976 with their three children.

A devoted mother and grandmother, Nel dedicated herself to nurturing and encouraging her family. Her greatest passion was her grandchildren, who kept her and Darrel extremely busy with sports games, concerts, day care and dance team competitions. Her indelible commitment to family will be looked to as an inspiration for years to come.

Nel’s life will continue to be celebrated on earth by her husband, Darrel; her three children, Brian Overton of Kasson, Paula (Brian) Auringer of Mantorville and Darren (Mary Lynn) Overton of Mantorville; eight grandchildren, Jared, Breanna, Kyle, Bryton, Alyssa, Broc, Abbie and Grant; sister, Julie (Carl) Stocks of Waterloo, Iowa; and numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends. In addition, they shared their home with Brian and Nancy Connelly, close family friends.

Nel was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Delores Miller; and brother, Ralph Zierath.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 5, at the United Methodist Church, 507 First Avenue N.W., in Byron, with Pastor Sharon Nelson officiating. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service on Thursday. There will be no reviewal. Burial will be at the Byron Cemetery. There will be a lunch at the church following the graveside service.

If desired, memorials may be directed to the family to be donated in Nel's memory.
