A Private Memorial Service for Richard Sawyer will be held on Saturday, August 8, at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church in Plainview, with Father William Becker officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joachim’s Catholic Cemetery in Plainview.
Richard Earl Sawyer, 86, of Plainview, passed away at his home in Plainview on Tuesday, March 17, 2020 with his family by his side. He was born November 11, 1933 in Rochester to Earl and Rosalia (Shea) Sawyer. Richard attended rural schools through the 6th grade, and then attended Rochester High School graduating in 1952. He then worked for Plainview Produce until April 1953 when he joined the US Air Force. Richard served his country proudly during the Korean Conflict. He married Deanna Lockerbie on August 26, 1956 in Cumberland, MD.
The Sawyer’s moved to Plainview in 1957 and Richard worked for Dill Elevator until 1958 when he went to work at IBM in Rochester for 33+ years. After he retired from IBM he worked for 9 years at Mallard Seeds in Plainview. Richard served on the Plainview City Council for 5 years and as Mayor of Plainview for 2 years. He was a member of St. Joachim’s Catholic Church in Plainview, the Plainview American Legion Post #179, and American Tech. Society.
Richard is survived by his loving wife of 64+ years, Deanna Sawyer of Plainview, daughter, Shari Lynn Anderson of Nashville; sons, Steve (Tami) Sawyer of Plainview, and Eric Sawyer of Lakeville; 3 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; sisters, Kathleen Steffen of Plainview, Jan Ohm of Elgin, and Pat (Melvin) Blattner of Lake City. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials will go to the city of Plainview for improvements to the walking trail (Trees, Benches) which Richard and his dog Murphy enjoyed using.
