John Richard Heyn, 82, of Plainview, passed away on Sunday, September 12, 2021, at Mayo Clinic Hospital – Rochester, Saint Marys Campus. He was born July 5, 1939, in Rochester to Erwin and Esther (Tetzlaff) Heyn. He attended Elgin Public Schools and graduated in 1957 and went on to the University of Minnesota Southern School of Agriculture at Waseca. While in high school and college John played center and full back on the football teams.
John farmed in the Elgin area until 1985 when he retired. He also owned and operated JR’s Post Road Inn and JR’s Catering with Patricia Smith that was well known for fish fry’s, steaks, and catering. In his free time, he enjoyed going fishing, hunting, and snowmobiling. He loved being an adopted grandpa and great grandpa. They were the highlight of his life.
John is survived by his two brothers, David Heyn of Elgin, and Donald Heyn of Elgin. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister-in-law Joyce Heyn and lifelong friend Patricia Smith.
The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 21, at Schleicher Funeral Homes, Plainview Chapel with Pastor Bob Blanshan officiating. Friends and family may visit from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow the service at the Elgin Cemetery in Elgin. A lunch and time of fellowship will follow the graveside service at the Plainview American Legion.
