Reno Vantaggi — Rochester
Reno Vantaggi, 100, died Thursday, April 4, 2013, at Maple Manor Healthcare and Rehabilitation where he had been confined for the past several weeks.
Reno was born in Marche Pesar, Italy, on June 14, 1912, to Adele Premieri and Palmina Cardinale. Reno and his mother moved to northern Michigan when he was a young child. He attended school in Iron River where he graduated from high school.During World War II he served in the U.S. Army in Africa, England, Germany and France. He was wounded twice and received a field promotion to the rank of Captain. He was called upon to serve again during the Korean conflict. After his military service, he moved to Rochester where he was employed as a construction laborer. He worked on the construction of Mayo Clinic buildings including the Mayo building.
On June 18, 1960, he married Zola Muriel Fawcett in Hesper, Iowa. Zola preceded him in death in 2008. Zola was a long-time organist at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Reno was always with her, being a truly devoted husband. He served as an usher for many years and would often visit patients at the hospitals.
Reno was very interested in the sports world and followed the Twins and Vikings on a regular basis. He enjoyed watching golf on TV, particular Tiger Woods. His mind stayed strong and he kept up with local and world news very attentively right to the end of his life. He loved to tell stories and had a rich sense of humor.
Reno is survived by a half sister, Leticia Ponozze, from Green Bay, Wis. He will be missed by many friends.
A memorial service for Reno and Zola, will be held at a later time.
