Richard 'Curley' Johnson — Rochester

Richard A. "Curley" Johnson, 85, of Rochester, died Sunday morning (June 26, 2016) at the Cottage Wood in Rochester.

Dick was born June 4, 1931, at the home of his parents Arthur and Myrtle (Engen) Johnson in Northfield, Minn. He was a 1949 graduate of Northfield High School and attended St. Olaf College for one year. He served with the Army from 1951-52, stateside. He married Karolyn "Kay" Lambert in 1961 in Northfield and the couple made their home in Rochester where he was an insurance agent with Prudential Insurance Co. until his retirement in 1996. After his retirement, the couple made their home on Red Cedar Lake in northern Wisconsin.

Dick was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Rochester, the Rochester Sertoma Club, the Williams Fund of the University of Minnesota, Rochester Youth Hockey and the Rochester Diplomats.

He is survived by his former wife, Kay of Phoenix; two sons, Mike (Marcia) Johnson of Stewartville, and Steve (Frank Koll) Johnson of San Diego; a grandson, Garrett Johnson of Stewartville; and a sister, Nancy (David) Topp of Faribault, Minn.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Gloria Behrens; and a brother, Bill Johnson, who died one day later than Dick on Monday, June 27, 2016.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. July 15 at Thauwald Funeral Home in Preston. Burial of his ashes with military honors will be in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Preston. Friends may call an hour before the service Friday at the funeral home.
